Garship Marine Surveying and Consultancy was founded by Capt. Gary Walsh, a Master Mariner living in Cape Town – SOUTH AFRICA.
Gary started his career at sea in 1982 and came ashore in December 1997 after sailing as Captain for two years. During his time at sea Gary served on General Cargo Vessels, Anchor Handling Supply Tug, Ro-Ro vessels, Bulk Carriers, Specialised Tankers and Container vessels.
He then joined the South African Maritime Safety Authority as a Senior Flag State and Port State surveyor. During the year 2000, Gary was responsible for all ‘Oil Pollution Incident investigations’ in Cape Town Harbour. In December 2000 Gary successfully complete studying and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Law from the University of Cape Town.
In May 2001 he was approached by Safmarine – a wholly owned subsidiary of AP Moller Maersk – to join their Ship Management team as a Marine Superintendent and later promoted to Senior Marine Superintendent. During his time at Safmarine his duties included being the DPA and CSO as well as Management Representative in terms of ISO 14001 Environmental Management which he was responsible for ensuring that the entire fleet of 21 container ships were compliant and audited. It was during his time with Maersk/Safmarine that Gary gained invaluable experience in Accident and Incident investigations, Root cause analysis and an in depth knowledge of completing comprehensive Marine Safety and Environmental ‘Risk Assessments’.
In June 2010 the Ship Management department of Safmarine closed down and that is when Gary started “Garship” after identifying a gap in the market for someone with his expertise, experience and training.
