CAPTAIN GARY WALSH

Gary Walsh LUDI4318

Captain Gary Walsh spent over 15 years at sea starting as a Navigation Cadet and ending his career after sailing for his last two years as Captain on General Cargo and dedicated Container vessels.

He sailed on the following types of vessels during his sea career and gained invaluable experience during this time:

  • Specialised Tankers – Bitumen
  • Anchor Handling / Supply Tugs
  • Bulk Carriers
  • Ro/Ro vessels
  • General Cargo vessels
  • Container vessels

After leaving the sea, Gary worked for the South African Maritime Safety Authority for 3 years (Feb. 1998 – April 2001) as a senior Flag and Port State Surveyor. During this time his duties included Accident Investigations and he was the surveyor responsible for Oil Spill Incident Investigations in the port of Cape Town on behalf of the authority. During 2000 Gary successfully completed and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Law from the University of Cape Town. In May 2001 Gary was appointed as the Marine Superintendent for Safmarine, a wholly owned subsidiary of the A.P.Moller – Maersk Group and later promoted to Senior Marine Superintendent. In May 2010 the Ship Management department of Safmarine was closed down and that is when Gary started Garship.

During his time with Safmarine some of Gary’s duties and responsibilities included:

  • Designated Person Ashore for Safety (ISM Code).
  • Company Security Officer (ISPS Code).
  • Management Representative – Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2004 Code).
  • Conducting ‘Internal Audits’ for Safety, Security and Environmental Management systems.
  • Conducting ‘Vetting Audits’ (Condition surveys) on owned, managed and charter vessel.
  • Monitor and ensure timely ‘Close Out’ of any non-conformities or deficiencies raised during internal, external or third party audits and Port State Control Inspections.
  • Ensure all vessels comply with all statutory and legislative requirements.
  • Liaise with Government Officials, Flag State and Port State Officials on maritime issues and challenges.
  • Ensure a high standard of ‘Safety Culture’ and ‘Environmental Awareness’ is maintained throughout the fleet and within the management team ashore.
  • Ensure ‘Preventative Measures’ are put in place for all identified risks within area of responsibility.
  • Monitor and ensure implementation and compliance with all new Maritime Legislation coming into force.
  • Daily advice to Masters on all aspects of their onboard responsibilities.
  • Gary has a Master Mariners Certificate of Competency – STCW’95 Regulation II/2.
